Cover Letter
_ 21 March 2012
To Whom It May Concern:
My purpose in composing this letter is to convince you of my enthusiasm for editing and consequently my suitability for the internship. It should not be difficult to convey, as it is a highly treasured skill of mine. My object in pursuing professional editing, apart from my significant interest in it, is that I hope it will permit me to work from home and allow me to tend to my primary responsibilities as a wife and, one day, mother. Currently, I am seeking a degree in English literature with a Spanish minor. As I progress in my schooling, I intend to take whatever steps necessary to ensure that I will be able to secure a job as an editor once I have obtained my degree.
Editing is an important aspect of my life, and primarily because I am passionate about reading good books. I assure you, the prospect of becoming an editor was not initially attractive to me as a high school student. I have been blessed with a talent in art, and many in my family encouraged me to pursue that course. In truth, my parents and grandparents hoped that I would select a career path related to art. After convincing them that I was considerably more interested in English, they were quick in their newfound efforts to provoke me into becoming a combined writer and illustrator. In reflection, it appears that their persistence in advocating specific careers for me was what pushed me toward editing. For the most part, I was indifferent to their suggestions. The realization that I had an inclination for editing became clear while taking an advanced English course. My classmates and I were required to peer-edit one another’s papers, and I was one of the better ones at it. I did not hurry through my classmate’s essays; I enjoyed reading them, and was both thorough and careful in my evaluations. Presently, several of my classmates realized this, and it was not long before I was willingly doing more than my share of editing. My English teacher noticed too, and I was invited to be a part of an exclusive club for those who would edit the school’s literary magazine. I participated in what was known as “Lit club” for two years before I graduated.
I cannot convey the depth of my captivation with editing. Most people do not understand how I am so absorbed by it. All I can tell them is that I enjoy reading and find it intriguing to learn of others' mentalities and have the opportunity to comprehend their perspectives. I am adept at spelling, correcting grammar, and I excel at properly using a thesaurus. I consider myself well-read and have an extensive familiarity with a variety of subject matters. I can read quickly and do not procrastinate with the prospect of deadlines. If I am unfamiliar with a term or idea, I do my research and ascertain that I comprehend the author’s intent. I consider my ability to successfully edit this letter and the attached résumé, an attestation of a long established accomplishment.
I ask that you consider my résumé and my qualifications for the job. I am very eager for an opportunity to participate in this internship that will benefit me both now and later in my life.
Sincerely,
Olivia O. S. Gunnell
